Before I prepare presentations to the community, I will tackle one last topic with five different philosophies. The topic will be tolerance.

I was able to discuss this topic with Ms. Bendall this week. Through our discussion, I realized the nuance within the idea of tolerance itself. For instance, what does tolerance mean? Is it simply the recognition of differences that produces discomfort to some level and the acceptance of the difference, or is it the recognition and respect of differences? Moreover, what is the limit of tolerance? To what extent would one’s tolerance become seen as inaction in face of tyranny? Why is tolerance important or not important? To what extent is something intolerable? How do people tolerate others?

Acknowledging the complexity of tolerance, I want to interview some people and organizations on campus to better understand what tolerance means in the eyes of others. Some organizations Ms. Bendall suggested include the BLSU, DEI Leadership Committee, Pride, and ASU.

By the end of February, I hope to accomplish the following action items:

  1. Read through this web page Ms. Bendall recommended.

  2. Prepare interview questions on tolerance

  3. Reach out for interviews. I hope to interview at least 3 individuals.

  4. Summarize interviews into a portfolio post. Think about how they would inform my writing on this topic.

  5. Identify 5 philosophies that address the topic of tolerance.
